## Chapter 6

### Part 1: For the activity in the Teacher's Edition, page 146

Provide students with a copy of the Activity page (PDF file).

Demonstrate how to play the “foul-shooting” game.

Put students in groups of four students to work on the activity. Have students use the chart to keep track of the results.

### Part 2: Be an Investigator

A good time to do this investigation is after Lesson 6 on making a bar graph.

#### Materials

- masking tape
- adding-machine tape
- yardsticks

#### Introducing the Investigation

Introduce the investigation by reading aloud the assignment at the top of the first page of the Description of Investigation and Student Report (PDF file), by having one of your students read aloud the assignment, or by having the students read the assignment individually.

Put students in groups of four to work on the investigation.

#### Doing the Investigation

Demonstrate how to put the masking tape on the floor, use the adding-machine tapes to show the length of a jump, and measure the tapes.

Suggest to the students that they create a bar graph where every space on the scale is 2 inches.

Students may need help finding the mean. You might want to demonstrate how to do this with the tapes of one of the groups. Note that this activity is very much like the activity that the students do in Lesson 2 of this chapter. The difference is that they do it with measuring tape instead of cubes.

#### Student Report

The newspaper article gives students an opportunity to show what they have done and communicate about mathematics.
