Chapter 6

Part 1: Home and School Investigation

Send the Letter to Family (PDF file) home with each child. Once all of the children have brought in the drawing of their table, put the children in pairs. Have the children share what they did with each other. Then have the class help you group all of the pictures by counting by 2s, counting by 3s, counting by 4s, etc. A good time to do this activity is after Lesson 2 on skip counting.

Part 2: Be an Investigator

A good time to do this investigation is after Lesson 4 on ordinal numbers.

Materials

Introducing the Investigation

Tell the children that they are each going to see how many times they can clap in five seconds. They will then find out who in their group came in first with the most number of claps, followed by the second and third most number of claps.

Put the children in groups of three to do the investigation and give each group an Investigator Worksheet.

Doing the Investigation

Tell the children that you are going to have them clap for five seconds, and you want them to count their claps as they are clapping. When you say Start, they will start, and when you say Stop, they will stop and write in the chart on the Student Worksheet the number of times they clapped.

Then have the children decide who in their group had the most claps. That person came in first. Have the children then figure out who came in second and third. Have them record the results on the Investigator Worksheet.

Extending the Investigation

Have other contests where the children decide who came in first, second, etc.
