Help with Opening PDF Files

Chapter 3

Part 1: Home and School Investigation

Send the Letter to Family (PDF file) home with each child. Show a few of the pictures each day as you go through this chapter. Let each child describe his or her picture and the subtraction situation it represents.

Part 2: Be an Investigator

A good time to do this investigation is after Lesson 6 on fact families.

Materials

Introducing the Investigation

Tell the children that they are going to create a picture story about a child with 18 balloons. The child in the story gives the balloons away, or something else happens to the balloons, until there are none left. Prompt the children to draw pictures that show what happened to the balloons. They will also write a subtraction sentence below each picture to show what happened. Distribute the cut-out student worksheets to the students for use in creating their stories.

Put the children in pairs to work on this investigation.

Provide students with the Investigator Worksheet (PDF file).

Doing the Investigation

You may need to help children develop their stories about the balloons. For example, instead of the child in the story giving them away, the balloons might fly away or pop.

When all of the children are finished, staple their story pages together to create a storybook.
