Help with Opening PDF Files

Chapter 6

Part 1: Home and School Investigation

Send the Letter to Family (PDF file) home with each child. Once all of the children have brought in their picture with the number sentence, have them show their picture and number sentence to the class. Put the pictures in groups by related subtraction facts either on the floor or on the board. When you are finished, ask the children what the addition sentences should be to complete each fact family. Write the addition sentences on pieces of paper and add them to the group. A good time to do this activity is after Lesson 5 on fact families.

Part 2: Be an Investigator

A good time to do this investigation is after Lesson 3 on how many more and how many fewer.

Materials

Introducing the Investigation

Ask children what their favorite farm animal is. Then show them the Investigator Worksheet with the Favorite Farm Animal graph. Tell them that they are going to have a chance to vote on which animal they like the best: the horse, the chicken, or the pig. Put the children in groups of eight and give each group one Investigator Worksheet. Tell the children that each child in the group should color in one rectangle on the graph for his or her favorite animal.

Doing the Investigation

When the groups are finished, have them fill in the subtraction sentences at the bottom of the page to compare the votes for the different animal choices.

Have a class discussion to determine how many groups chose the pig as their favorite animal, which animal was the least favorite, etc.
