Count and Compare Money Amounts: When Students Ask

  • Why is knowing about coins important?
Knowing about coins is important because we use coins to buy and sell things. You need to know how to count money so that you can pay for items you want to buy, or you want to be sure that you are being paid the right amount for items you want to sell.
  • What coins can I use to make one dollar?
A dollar is equal to 100 cents. You can use any coins you want to make up 100 cents. You can use 100 pennies, 20 nickels, 10 dimes, or 4 quarters. You can also use different combinations of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies, such as 2 quarters and 5 dimes, or 3 quarters, 2 dimes, and 1 nickel. You simply need to use coins that together equal 100 cents.
  • How can I compare money amounts?
Comparing money amounts is just like comparing numbers. You have to look at the total value of each amount to see which is greater. You need to look at the numbers in the tens and ones places to see which are greater. Just remember that you are comparing the value of each group of coins, NOT the number of coins in each group.
  • How can I find out if I have enough money to buy two things?
To see if you have enough money to buy two items, you have to add to find the total cost for the two items. You add each price and get the total cost. Once you have the total, you can then compare the amount of money you have with the total cost. If you have money that is equal to or more than that total cost, you can buy two things. If not, you need more money to buy them.
