Place Value to 100

• Count as many real classroom objects as possible. Be sure to group the items into groups of tens when possible.

• Count up to the hundredth day of school. Start on the first day, and count up to the hundredth day. Use numbers and counters to show the daily progression. To show the numbers, use a roll of adding-machine tape, and string the daily count along the top of the chalkboard around the classroom. Use 3 containers labeled hundred, tens, and ones. Use coffee stirrers to count days, and bundle each group of ten with a rubber band and place the bundle in the tens box.

• Whenever you make groups of objects, try to use place-value terminology.

• Discuss place value daily when doing calendar activities.

• You can relate place value to 100 to money values up to a dollar. You can use money to model how to make trades: 10 pennies for 1 dime, 30 pennies for 3 dimes, and so on.
