Justifying Answers

  • Why should I learn this?
It takes a while to work out a problem, and you want to make sure the answer is correct. It will help you later when you have to work more difficult problems.

  • How can I justify my answers when I add?
After you have made sure that you have all the information and know that the problem wants you to add, you can use manipulatives, you can draw a picture, or you can add the numbers in a different order.

  • How can I justify my answers when I subtract?
After you have made sure that you have all the information and know that the problem wants you to subtract, you can use manipulatives, you can draw a picture, or you can add the two small numbers to see if they equal the large number.
