Pattern Puzzlers

Math Activity

In this activity, children will identify triangles, circles, and squares and will show their understanding of patterns by continuing a pattern that contains three different elements.

WHAT YOU NEED

WHAT TO DO
  1. Draw this pattern on the chalkboard: triangle, circle, square, triangle, circle, square, triangle, circle, square. Have children identify the shapes and tell one or more of their attributes. (For example: 3 sides, no sides, no corners, 4 sides.)

  2. Have children name the next three shapes in the pattern.

  3. Draw this pattern on the board illustrating another way three shapes can be used to create a pattern: circle, circle, triangle, circle, circle, triangle, circle, circle, triangle. Have children identify the next three shapes in the pattern.

  4. Distribute the Spring Scene and Cutouts. Tell children to work with one pattern at a time. If they begin with the birds, they are to cut out all the birds and then glue the bird pictures to the Spring Scene to continue the pattern shown. Then the children continue the pattern for the socks and the flowers.

  5. Children may color their finished pictures.

TEACHING OPTIONS

You may wish to have children create their own pattern of socks on a clothesline or row of flowers, and then exchange it with a friend and complete each other's pattern.
