Choosing Sides

Math Activity

In this activity, children working in pairs will sort two-sided counters and then place them on the appropriate place on a page to show their understanding of tens and ones to 31. Children will cut, color, and paste to record the results.

WHAT YOU NEED

WHAT TO DO

  1. Distribute 31 two-sided counters to each pair and have them turn over the white counters so that they all show red. Tell children to count out ten and put them in a row so they are touching. Illustrate this on the board. Guide children to construct two more rows of ten on their desks. One counter is left. Tell children there are three 10's and one left over, which equals 31 counters.

  2. Distribute a bag to each child. Have children put the counters in the bag, give it a shake, and then carefully dump the counters out on their desks.

  3. Pass out Sorting Board. Have children sort the counters by color on the Sorting Board. Next, have them stack groups of ten counters as illustrated on the chalkboard and keep extras separate.

  4. Children then put the counters back in the bag and dump them out again, repeating the sorting and counting as often as time allows.

  5. Tell children that they'll record their last two groups of counters. Children dump out the counters for the last time and sort them. Children then color the number of tens and ones on their sorting board.

TEACHING OPTIONS

You may have children use the two-sided counters and sorting boards with fewer than ten counters to illustrate addition.
