1. Plan It

A. Discuss. Look at the List of Shapes here on Education Place or on page 205 of your textbook. Discuss how they can be used in your design.

B. Brainstorm. Decide what kind of building you want to create. Each group should pick something different to design. Some ideas include:

• a house
• a school
• an apartment building
• a grocery store

C. Design your model. Draw a picture of your building. Remember to use the List of Shapes to help with your design. Use as many shapes as you can in your design.

2. Put It Together

A. Gather building materials. Find as many of the shapes from the list as you can. Use everyday objects, or make the shapes using heavy paper.

B. Build your model. Use the shapes you collected and your design to build your model.

Review your model.

• How many different shapes did you use in your model?
• How did using geometric shapes help your design?
