The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.
The article “At the Edge” explores a large asteroid recently discovered at the edge of our solar system. Quaoar is 4 billion miles from Earth and 1 million miles past Pluto. Scientists also believe that Pluto may be an asteroid.
The Word Wise activity has students answer questions based on information they read about in the article, as well as in the table titled, “Size of Quaoar Compared With Other Space Objects.”
The Data Hunt activity asks students to answer five questions about the planets in our solar system and about Quaoar, including distance from the Sun (in miles) and length of year (in Earth years).
