Weekly Reader Connections

Teacher Guide: Lesson 7.7

The Weekly Reader Connections feature on Kids' Place Houghton Mifflin Math provides your students with additional information about the topics that appear in the Curriculum Connection feature in their student books.

The article “Pizza With Pizzazz” shares the story of Joe Carlucci, a pizza-tossing champion who competes in culinary competitions around the country and in the World Pizza Championship held each year in Italy.

Have students read the article on their own and then complete the Word Wise activity. The activity asks students to make a list of words that have multiple meanings. The example given from the article is the word “dough,” which can be used to mean a mixture of flour and water or to refer to money. Students may use a thesaurus for help.

In the Data Hunt activity, students read a table containing prices of vegetables at a market and imagine that they are shopping for ingredients to make a veggie pizza. They need to compute the prices of multiple items, and determine how much money would be saved by shopping elsewhere.
