New Coin Honors a Tennessee Hero
The United States government makes the money that we spend. The government's Treasury Department prints paper bills and mints metal coins. In a new program, the Treasury Department will mint new coins to honor presidents of the United States. The coins, worth one dollar, will honor four different presidents each year.
Andrew Jackson Dollar
One of the dollar coins of 2008 honors President Andrew Jackson. The front of the coin shows Andrew Jackson. The Statue of Liberty is pictured on the back of the coin. The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom for our country and people around the world.
A Tennessee Hero
Andrew Jackson lived much of his life in Tennessee. Many people think of him as a Tennessee hero.
In 1815, the United States was at war with Great Britain. Andrew Jackson led Tennessee soldiers and other men against the British Army. Jackson and his men won the Battle of New Orleans.
“Old Hickory”
Many said that Andrew Jackson and people from Tennessee were tough. They called Andrew Jackson “Old Hickory.” The hickory tree has tough wood that does not break easily. People thought Jackson was as strong and tough as a hickory branch.
Thirteen years later, Andrew Jackson became the seventh President of the United States. He served from 1829 to 1837.
