Firefighters at Work
Firefighters do important work. They keep people safe by fighting fires. They help people learn fire safety. Every community needs firefighters. Since 2000, the first week in May each year has been set aside to honor firefighters in North Carolina.
Firefighters practice their work every day. They use special tools and clothes to do their jobs well.
Fire Trucks
Trucks help firefighters get to a fire quickly. The trucks come with long ladders, hoses, and other tools to help firefighters put out fires.
Clothing
Firefighters wear special clothes. Each firefighter wears a helmet, a mask, a jacket, pants, and boots. These clothes keep firefighters safe from flames, heat, and smoke.
Where Most Fires Start
Most fires start in the kitchen. Adults must use a stove carefully. Using stoves the wrong way is the main cause of house fires.
Fire Safety
- Practice a fire escape plan with your family.
- If a fire starts, get out and stay out.
- Stay away from matches, lighters, and stoves.
- Ask adults in your home to test smoke alarms once a month.
Fire safety helps your family and home stay safe. Firefighters keep your community safe.
