Marjory Stoneman Douglas 1890-1998
Protector of Florida's Everglades

Marjory Stoneman Douglas was called the “Grandmother of the Glades.” A grandmother cares for her family. Douglas spent her life caring for the Everglades in Florida. Everglades are lands that are always wet. Many plants and animals live there.

Douglas wrote many books. One of her books showed people the beauty of the Florida Everglades. Douglas wanted to save this land because people were not taking good care of it. She worked with government leaders and helped make the Everglades a National Park. She also started a group called Friends of the Everglades. This group tells people ways they can help the Everglades.
