The year was 1940. Nazi Germany, under the rule of dictator Adolf Hitler, had invaded parts of Europe. The people of Great Britain felt like they were losing the war with Germany. They needed strength and leadership. Prime Minister Winston Churchill provided it. Churchill comforted the British people, telling them, “We shall never surrender.” His unwavering leadership was an important factor in the defeat of Germany in 1945.
Throughout his career, Churchill's powerful, well-written speeches influenced people all over the world. After the war, Churchill gave a speech in which he said an “iron curtain” had fallen over Europe. That became the term that was often used to describe the division between democratic western Europe and communist eastern Europe.
Churchill was knighted in 1953 because of his noble service to the British people. In Great Britain, a knighthood is one of the highest honors a person can receive.
