Leslie India Lefkow
Human Rights Worker

Leslie Lefkow cares about helping other people. That is why she works for non governmental organizations (NGOs). For six years she worked with Doctors Without Borders. Then she joined Human Rights Watch. This NGO works to protect the rights of people all over the world.

Lefkow is a researcher. She gathers information about what is happening in an area where people need help. Then, she writes a report. Lately she has worked in Sudan, a war torn country in Africa. Many people there have been killed or driven from their homes because of fighting between government and rebel soldiers. In her reports, Lefkow describes how the fighting is hurting people. She tells what governments and the United Nations can do to help.

Lefkow's work for Human Rights Watch has helped bring the suffering in areas like Sudan to the world's attention. Her hope now, she says, is “that things will change.”
