Art from Africa
An unknown artist carved two large giraffes into a rock in Africa about 7,000 years ago. Now a copy of that life-sized carving is in the United States.
Old rock carvings have been found on every continent except Antarctica. Some of those carvings are only a few inches long. The carving of the giraffes is 18 feet high!
The giraffe carving was discovered in 1997. It is located in Niger, a country in North Africa. The carving could not be removed. Instead, a copy of it was made using aluminum, a type of metal. The copy is on display at a museum in Washington, D.C.
