New York City

More than eight million people live in New York City. While several other cities in the United States cover a larger area than New York City, none of them has a larger population. Population is the number of people who live in a place.

A Busy City

The streets are crowded in New York City. People shop, walk their dogs, go to work, and meet friends. They ride in cars, buses, and taxicabs. The city is even busy under the streets, where people ride the subways.

On both sides of the streets are stores where people shop, apartment buildings where people live, and office buildings where people work. Many of the city's buildings are skyscrapers that are more than 50 floors high.

Special Places

New York City has famous landmarks. A landmark is something, such as a statue, that identifies a place. When people see a landmark, they know where they are. Two of New York's landmarks are the Empire State Building and Central Park.

The Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is a famous skyscraper. After the World Trade Center was destroyed on September 11, 2001, the Empire State Building is once again the tallest building in New York City. It opened in 1931. At that time, it was the tallest building in the world. It is about 1,454 feet high, including an antenna at the top. If you could lay it on its side, you would need a space the length of more than four football fields. The Empire State Building has 102 floors, 1,860 steps, and 6,500 windows. A glass-enclosed observatory surrounded by an open-air walkway circles an upper floor. An observatory is a place where people can look out into the distance. On clear days, visitors to the observatory can see as far away as 80 miles. They can see parts of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

Central Park

Central Park is a huge park in the middle of Manhattan, which is part of New York City. Central Park was built in the late 1800s. It is two and one-half miles long and one-half mile wide. Packed into that space are walking trails and horseback riding trails, ball fields, many statues, and a zoo. On a high rock in the park sits a castle that looks like something out of a fairy tale. It is a United States Weather Service Station. The park also has playgrounds, a skating rink, and a house where people can play chess and checkers. There are wooded areas, streams, waterfalls, and a lake. Central Park has places for concerts and a theater where people see plays. There is something for almost everyone at Central Park.
