New York City

A city is a place where many people live and work. The city in the United States that has the most people is New York City. About eight million people live there.

A Busy City

The streets are crowded in New York City. People shop, walk their dogs, go to work, and meet friends. They ride in buses and yellow taxicabs. They ride subways under the streets. Many tall buildings called skyscrapers stand on both sides of the streets. People work in these buildings. Most skyscrapers have more than 50 floors.

Special Places

A landmark is a special place. The Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building are two New York City landmarks.

The Empire State Building is a famous skyscraper. It was built almost 75 years ago. At that time, it was the tallest building in the world. There are 102 floors, 1,860 steps, and 6,500 windows in the Empire State Building.

The Statue of Liberty is a sculpture of a woman holding a book and a torch, which is a light that can be carried. The statue is meant to be a symbol of freedom. It is easy to see the statue from far away because it is 152 feet tall. Each of the statue's fingernails is about the size of a piece of notebook paper.
