Sea Lions on the Piers in San Francisco

People like to visit the piers in San Francisco, California. A pier is a platform built on tall posts over the water. San Francisco's Pier 39 is packed with sea lions. They sleep in the sun, bark loudly, and eat fish.

Why Sea Lions Like the Pier

Animal experts are not sure why sea lions first came to Pier 39. A lot of sea lions like it there though. Sometimes there are 600 sea lions on the pier!

Some people think that the sea lions followed herring to shore. Herring is a kind of fish. It is also a favorite food of sea lions. Other people think sea lions like the pier because the piers are big and the sea lions have a lot of room.
