Learn More About It
Los Angeles was one of the fastest growing cities in the United States in the 50 years after 1955. Greater Los Angeles grew from about 5 million people in 1955 to about 17 million people in 2005. As the area’s population was growing, so was its freeway system. Since the first six-mile freeway was completed in 1940, over 600 miles of freeway have been built in and around Los Angeles.
