What's a Cinquain?

Have you ever written a poem? Poems are one way to express yourself with words. There are many different types of poems to choose from. You could write an epic poem, which is a long poem that tells a story. You might try a funny poem, like a limerick or nursery rhyme. Or you could write a cinquain.

The word cinquain comes from the French word cinq, which means “five.” It is called that because it has five lines. Here is an example of a cinquain:

Bear
Fuzzy, brown
Rolls, runs, growls
Sleeps all the time
Grumpy

The table below tells how to write a cinquain. It tells how many words are in each line. It also tells what kinds of words go in each line.

Line 1 one word Topic of the poem
Line 2 two words Describing words that tell about the word in line one
Line 3 three words Action words that tell about the word in line one
Line 4 four words Feelings or a sentence about the word in line one
Line 5 one word A word that sums up the poem or means the same thing as the word in line one

Activity

How fast can you think of action words and describing words? How many of these words can you write in one minute? Test your skills.

Work with a partner. You will need a stopwatch or a clock with a second hand. Fold a piece of lined paper in half. At the top of the left side of your paper, write: Describing Words. At the top of the right side of your paper, write: Action Words.

Have your partner time you as you write as many action words as you can in one minute. Then write as many describing words as you can in one minute. Time your partner as he or she does the same. Check your work. How many of each type of word did you write?

Data Hunt

Write a math cinquain. Choose a math word, such as triangle or division. Write a cinquain about that math word. Here's an example:

Geometry
Fun, Interesting
Looking, Drawing, measuring
I like drawing angles
Shapes

Suppose some of your classmates each wrote a cinquain. Answer each of the questions below, using multiplication to solve.

  1. Three classmates each wrote a cinquain. What is the total number of describing words in all three poems? Write a math sentence to solve.
  2. Seven classmates each wrote a cinquain. What is the total number of action words in all seven poems? Write a math sentence to solve.
  3. Six classmates each wrote a cinquain. What is the total number of action words in all six poems? Write a math sentence to solve.
  4. Nine classmates each wrote a cinquain. What is the total number of describing words in each poem? Write a math sentence to solve.
Write your own multiplication problem about cinquains. Challenge a classmate to solve it.
