North, South, East, West

Weather vanes like this one spin around to tell us which way the wind is blowing. North, south, east, or west, weather vanes catch the slightest breeze to point straight into the wind. And since winds are named for the direction from which they blow, anyone looking at this little fellow rowing due south would know that there's a south wind blowing. Happy rowing!

Vocabulary

direction:

A direction is somewhere you can look or point or go. North, south, east, and west are directions.

east:

East is a direction. The sun rises in the east. East is the opposite of west.

north:

North is a direction. If you look where the sun rises, north is on your left.

south:

South is a direction. It is the opposite of north. If you look at where the sun rises, south is to your right.

west:

West is a direction. The sun sets in the west. West is the opposite of east.
