Portrait of Leyla Torres

Growing up, Leyla Torres loved to make dolls, read, and paint. Later, she studied fine arts in college, taught art, and worked with some puppeteers. It was while helping to put on puppet shows that she first got the idea of making her own books.

A desire to visit some of the great art museums of the world led Leyla Torres to New York City. There, in a branch of the New York Public Library, she found thousands of children's books. Those books inspired her, and she had discovered her career.

  • Leyla Torres's stay in New York City was supposed to last only a year. However, while there she met and married her husband. They still live in New York, but they also love to visit a small house they have in Vermont's Green Mountains.
  • Because his wife's family in Colombia speaks Spanish, Leyla Torres's husband learned to speak it, too.
