Portrait of Jan Epton Seale

Jan Epton Seale lives in the southern tip of Texas, just across the Rio Grande river from Mexico. "I see parrots every morning," she says. "Green chameleons live in my yard. There are animals here, like a tiny toad, that are not found anywhere else in the United States."

As a child, Seale was often sick in bed. She cheered herself up writing stories and poems. She says, "As a writer, I still like to make books and recite poems. I teach people how to write their life stories, and I hear great stories from people who come from all over to take the classes I give."
