Meet the Author

Laura Numeroff

Laura Numeroff lives in California and was born in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up, her favorite things were her microscope, her box of 64 crayons, and her library card. By age nine she was writing and drawing her own stories and visiting the library every week. She happily remembers reading Stuart Little, Eloise, and books about animals.

At first Numeroff wanted to be a fashion designer, like her sister Emily. But she changed her mind and took a class in writing and illustrating children's books. For her first homework assignment, she wrote a book about the tallest girl in the third grade. It was soon published! She was on her way as an author.

  • If You Give a Mouse a Cookie was Numeroff's tenth book. The idea came to her on a car trip she took from San Francisco to Oregon.
  • One of her other jobs was running a merry-go-round.
  • Numeroff has a dog named Sydney, two sister cats named Lily and Petunia, and a horse named Oliver.
  • When she visits classrooms, Numeroff sometimes does her own dance called "Doin' the Mouse Cookie."
