Try one of these ways to catch your readers' interest in the first sentence.

Describe the setting.

It was a December evening, and the city was twinkling with colorful holiday lights.

Describe an action.

Abigail crawled through the entrance to her tree house and pulled up the rope ladder.

Use dialogue.

“No, you may not have a cheetah for a pet!” Jamal's mom said for the zillionth time.
