Grade 3: Opinion Essay

Does each of your paragraphs make just one main point?

After your opening, begin each paragraph with a sentence that tells a reason for your opinion. Be sure all the details in the paragraph are about that reason.

One reason why I think my grandfather is great is that he is very smart. [That's your topic sentence. The rest of the paragraph should show how your grandfather is smart.] When I have trouble with my homework, he can help me figure out how to do it. Sometimes Mom helps too. [That sentence isn't about Grandpa.] He also figures out how to fix things. One time our kitchen sink was leaking. Even the plumber couldn't fix it, but Grandpa did.
