Grade 2: Personal Narrative

How can you help your readers imagine what happened?

Include details that tell what, who, why, when, and where.

Not enough details: The chimpanzees were my favorite animals at the zoo. We spent the most time watching them. [Why were they your favorite animals? What did they do?]

Much better: The chimpanzees were my favorite animals at the zoo. Two chimps unwrapped sandwiches and ate them together. Then they picked bugs out of each other's fur and ate the bugs. That really made us laugh!
