Grade 7: Opinion Essay

Use strong, clear reasons to show that your opinion makes sense.

Give reasons that don't just restate your opinion.

Opinion: Tennis is more fun than baseball.

Real reason: Tennis keeps me moving all the time.

Not a real reason: I like tennis more.

Give reasons that relate to your opinion.

Opinion: I hate to get dressed up.

Strong reason: I don't like to worry about wrinkling or messing up my clothes.

Irrelevant reason: I look great in purple.

Give specific reasons. Don't be vague or general.

Opinion: Saturday is the best day of the week.

Specific reason: I can play hockey or soccer with friends.

Too general: I usually have some fun.

If you write about one point of view, give at least three good reasons.

If you write about two points of view, give at least two reasons for each point of view.
