Demographics of sample population:
Tacoma, Washington is the third largest school district in the state with enrollment of over 32,000 students. Jason Lee Middle School is a Title I school; its students are part of the lowest socioeconomic group in the district. The student population is approximately 60% Caucasian, 20% African American, 14% Asian, 5% Hispanic, and 2% Native American.

Purpose of study:

Methodology:
A Reading Specialist and Classroom teacher conducted the Soar to Success instruction. An in-class model was used with groups comprised of no more than 8 students.

Measures/indicators used to assess effectiveness:
Gates-MacGinitie Standardized Assessment.

Pre–and posttest scores reflect the vocabulary as well as comprehension results.
