Demographics of sample population:
Springfield Missouri is classified as a mid-size city of 250,000. The
economic base is a mix of industries and agriculture with high poverty
rates. There are 24,000 students in this district, with 7,300 attending
Title I schools. The student population is approximately 97% Caucasian,
5% African American, and 2% Hispanic.
Purpose of study:
To evaluate the effectiveness of the Soar to Success program.
Methodology:
The 673 students in this study received intervention instruction for
88 days. The groups met for 45 minutes per day, five days a week. The
students were reading at least two years below level. The classroom
teachers delivered the instruction. The Burns and Roe Informal Reading
Inventory was used as a pre and post test.

Findings: The students in the study made a mean gain of 2.2
grade levels during the 88 days of instruction.
