Demographics of
sample population:
Belfair, WA is a rural district. Hawkins Middle School is in a
fairly low economic community. The school enrolls 6th, 7th and
8th grades and has a population of approximately 4,000. Approximately
90% of the student population is Caucasian.
Purpose of study:
Measure progress over time of Soar To Success middle school
students.
Methodology:
Soar to Success instruction was provided by the Title I
Reading Specialist. It was scheduled as a regular class in Middle
School, so it was a modified version of a pullout program. Students
received additional daily reading instruction in another class.
Measures/indicators
used to assess effectiveness:
Gates-MacGinitie Reading Assessment was used.
Findings: Pretesting
was done in October of 1998 and posttesting was done in January
of 1999. The Composite score combines Vocabulary and Comprehension.
Three out of the four classes improved a full grade level; the
fourth class improved .5 grade level during the course of instruction.
