Research Based Sample Lesson Plan for Soar to Success
Revisiting
(5 minutes)Students reread, alone or with a partner, previously read Soar to Success books. Teacher works with individual students to take a retelling, conduct an oral reading check, or coach their reading.
OR
Teacher and students hold a group conference on independently read books.Builds fluency

Reviewing
(5 minutes)Students summarize previous day's reading, using graphic organizers. Students and teacher discuss strategies used and share examples of their use beyond Soar to Success.
Develops comprehension
Keeps students focused on effective comprehension strategies
Rehearsing
(5 -10 minutes)Teacher does a quick text walk, guided preview, cooperative preview, or independent preview of text to be read. Students may predict, question, or start a K-W-L chart.
Builds background specifically for the text to be read (Clay, 1979; 1985; 1991)
Sets purpose for reading
Reading and Reciprocal Teaching
(5 -10 minutes)Students silently read a meaningful chunk of text to verify predictions or answer questions. Following reading, reciprocal teaching is employed, with the students and teacher taking turns assuming the role of the teacher to model these four strategies:
SUMMARIZE (first)
CLARIFY, QUESTION, PREDICT (in any order)Applies strategies for comprehension (Pearson, 1984)
Develops students' ability to construct meaning (Palincsar & Brown, 1984a; 1984b;1985; Palincsar, 1984)
Responding/
Reflecting
(5 minutes)Students do one or more of the following:
--Make a written response after discussing their reflections
