Longer Chapter Books
Teachers sometimes tell us that their students have difficulty completing the silent reading of the assigned chunk of text within a reasonable amount of time.
This sometimes happens once students reach the longer, chapter books.
An idea suggested by the authors is to divide the assigned chunk of text into two separate reading assignments to be covered over two days.
For example, instead of students reading pages 10-35 in one sitting, they may read pages 10-20 today and 21-35 tomorrow.
It is important to divide the longer chunk of text into two parts at a natural break.
Teachers using this approach would then need to modify the lesson plan for the first chunk and develop a new lesson for the second chunk of text.
An example of how this can be done is provided at each Soar to Success level.
Lesson 1a is the lesson that supports the first chunk of text.
Lesson 1b is the lesson for the second chunk of text.
Changes from what is in the Teacher Manual text are indicated in blue in each lesson.
The model lessons provided here are from Book 1 in each level, not the longer chapter books; by using these fully scripted lessons teachers are provided a detailed model to follow when creating their own lessons.
