About the Program

The Next Generation of Math Programs

In the fall of 2005, Math Expressions was welcomed into classrooms across the nation. Teachers, students, and supervisors quickly saw that by combining aspects of traditional approaches with the most powerful elements of reform teaching,

Math Expressions developed deep conceptual understanding and fluency. And now, based on our experiences in these classrooms, we are thrilled to provide the new Math Expressions © 2009 - the next generation of math programs.

A Fresh Approach to Standards-Based Instruction

Combining a Blend of Traditional and Standards-Based Instruction

Math Expressions is a complete Kindergarten–Grade 5 mathematics curriculum that offers new ways to teach and learn mathematics.

Combining the most powerful elements of standards-based instruction with the best of traditional approaches, Math Expressions uses objects, drawings, conceptual language, and real-world situations to help students build mathematical ideas that make sense to them.

Focused on Inquiry and Fluency

Balancing deep understanding with essential skills

Math Expressions balances deep understanding with essential skills and problem solving. Students invent, question, and explore, but also learn and practice important math strategies.

Through daily Math Talk, students explain their methods and, in turn, become more fluent in them.

Learning with Understanding

Here's what teachers are

"With Math Expressions, students learn with understanding, increase language competencies, and develop sophisticated use of mathematical representations. Meaningful math activities are supported by explanations that link drawings of situations or operations to numerical methods, and by Math Talk that identifies differences, strengths, and weaknesses of different methods."

Differentiated for All Learners

In-Depth and Practical Instruction for all Students

Every Math Expressions lesson includes intervention, on level, and challenge differentiation to support classroom needs.

In addition, leveled math writing prompts provide opportunities for in-depth thinking and analysis, and help prepare students for high-stakes tests.

Support for English language learners is integrated throughout the program.

"Activities and strategies should be developed and incorporated into instructional materials to assist teachers in helping all students become proficient in mathematics”

Math Expressions - Response to Intervention

The publication from the What Works Clearing House for the US Department of Education, “Assisting Students Struggling with Mathematics: Response to Intervention (RtI) for Elementary and Middle Schools” recommends many of the approaches already found in Math Expressions.

For example:

  • Facts fluency strategies of 10 minutes(daily Quick Practice), page 12
  • Composition/decomposition of number, page 51
  • Visual representations, page 12
  • Make-a-10 strategy, page 49
  • Representation of multi-digit-addition, page 34
  • Approach to Multiplication, page 35
  • Distributive property, page 50
  • Problem structures: Change problems, page 27; Compare problems, page 28.
