The book I’m reviewing is titled Grandfather’s Journey. It was written and illustrated by Allen Say. The story is about a man telling a story about his grandfather’s adventure from Japan to the United States. I loved the story. I especially enjoyed the illustrations. The cover of the book is my favorite illustration because it shows vivid and colorful details as the grandfather stands on a boat’s deck with strong, active ocean waves behind him. My favorite part of the story was when the grandfather went back to Japan to marry his childhood sweetheart. Even though he loved the United States, he still returned to his homeland to marry his childhood sweetheart. After marrying, the grandfather brought his new wife to San Francisco Bay where they had a daughter. I would recommend Grandfather’s Journey because it is a great story. I think this book is O. K. It is not the best book in the world (I think the Harry Potter series is the best). I like how the author writes the words, like at the end when it said that Grandfather was sad. It didn't say, "Grandfather is sad," it said, "He never kept another songbird again." My friends would like this book.

Grandfather's Journey is about a person that once lived in California. In Japan he once met a person that was a girl. Then they became friends and then he had to go and visit his other place. He had to go and visit California. Then it was one month later and he went back to Japan. My friends would like this book.

The main character is Allen's grandfather. Allen explains how America looked and felt to his grandfather. It says what he saw and what he liked best. He went to Japan again after a while. He got married to a woman and then took her to see California. They got a daughter and she lived in California until she was nearly grown. Japan was no place for her. Her father took her anyway and she got a child of her own. That boy was Allen. My friends would like this book.
Angela G., Grade 4

I like the story because it's weird and it's cool at the same time. The other reason why I like it is because they go to different places. And I don't like the part when they say, "I think I know my grandfather now. I miss him very much." And I don't think it shouldn't be about the author. My friends would like this book.
Imani I., Grade 4

I like the story because it tells you that even if you like one place, you will always miss your homeland. What I don't like about the story is when Grandfather died. I felt sad. I also didn't like it when the war began, because they lost everything they had. When the grandson went to see California, he liked it just how his grandfather did. It was sad when the grandson said that he missed his grandfather very much because he died. I feel sad because after the war in Japan the kid's grandfather died and because his grandfather didn't go to California. I felt a little bit happy because his grandfather didn't go to California, but the grandson did, and he loved it like his grandfather did. My friends would like this book.

This story is about a boy and his grandfather that have the same experience between Japan and The United States. I don't really like this book because it doesn't have any action or funny parts. But it is also good because it shows emotion. It also compares two countries. There are good parts and not-so-good parts. My friends would like this book.

Grandfather left his home when he was young. He went to North America for the first time. Of all the places he went he liked California best. Bombs hit Japan and everything was destroyed. Allen Say remembers his grandfather and misses him very much. I think this story was a very good selection because it shows feeling when Grandfather married his sweetheart and brought her to California. My friends would like this book.

Grandfather's Journey is a good book for all ages. It is about a boy named Allen Say who tells about his grandfather's trip to the New World, North America. In the story, Allen's grandfather shows courage when his city burns down. You really should read this story. When I read the story I really enjoyed the characters. My favorite character was the grandfather. Here are some facts about him: he is very adventurous, he likes to meet new people, and he keeps songbirds as pets. I highly recommend this story. My friends would like this book.

This story takes place in Japan and in the United States. The reason I like this story is because it's so amazing with its details, like the pictures in the story. I also love the coast of California and the bright, sunny sunshine. I like most of this story. The reason I don't like this story is because of the sadness, like World War II and all the sad Americans after the war. I don't like part of the story. My friends would like this book.
Matthew Y., Grade 4

Do you want to read a story with imagination and action? Then you should read this one. I liked this story because it was sad and had adventure, like when he went to all those countries. An example of sadness is when he missed his home. An example of action is when Grandfather went to all those places. My favorite character is Grandfather because he was so adventuress and kind and he was a good sport. I would be so homesick! If you read a story, read this one! My friends would like this book.
