Where We Came From

Social Studies

Children will explore their family heritage.

What You Need

  • A large map of the world, displayed on a bulletin board
  • Colored stickers, big enough for child's name and name of selected country
  • Index cards
  • Yarn
  • Thumbtacks (optional)

What to Do

  1. In preparation for the activity, have children ask their parents and relatives to list the countries where their ancestors were born.

  2. In class, have each child choose a country from their list and write the country's name on the top line of an index card.

  3. Have children research the country and write five or more interesting facts about the country and/or culture on the index card.

  4. Create a bulletin board labeled "Where We Came From." Below the title staple a large map of the world to the bulletin board, and then staple the students' index cards around the border of the map.

  5. Have children find their country on the map and place a thumbtack on their country. Then have them use a piece of yarn to connect their country with their index card.
