Weather Frieze

Science/Art

Children will make a frieze of cardboard panels showing different kinds of weather and display it in the classroom.

What You Need

  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Masking tape
  • Markers

What to Do

  1. Brainstorm with children a list of weather phenomena. Write them on the board or chart paper. The list might include: sunshine, rain, drizzle, snow, fog, hail, sleet, hurricane, tornado, rainbow, thunderstorm, ice storm, wind, cloud, hot, cold, humid, haze, and dust.

  2. Ask children to each choose one kind of weather from the list.

  3. Have children draw a picture or scene showing their kind of weather on a cardboard panel. You may wish to discuss what the scenes show.

  4. Have children write the name of their weather on the panel in large upper and lower-case letters.

  5. Collect all the panels and staple or tape them together, side to side, in a long horizontal frieze.

  6. Display the frieze along the top of a classroom wall.
