My Family Tree

Social Studies/Art

Children will illustrate and label a family tree of family members and friends.

What You Need

  • Photographs of children's family members
  • Markers or crayons
  • Sheets of drawing paper
  • Scissors
  • Paste or glue

What to Do

  1. Invite children to bring in photographs, if possible, of family members. Tell them to make sure it is all right if the photos are cut and glued.

  2. Explain to children that people sometimes show a family as a tree with many branches. Tell them that they will use their photographs or make drawings for a family tree. (Note: Children can include friends if they wish, as members of their extended family.)

  3. Have children draw on a large sheet of paper a big tree with as many branches as there are family members they want to include.

  4. Have children paste to the branches photographs or cutouts from photographs. Or children can draw family members on branches.

  5. Have children write the names of family members under each illustration.

  6. Invite children to present their trees to the class, or display them on a bulletin board.
